Kanchana lives in Mississauga and speaks Tamil and Sinhalese.
She founded the first Sri Lankan community-based organization in Mississauga, Sri Lankan-Canadian Community Services-Peel. Kanchana also served as the Chair of the Sri Lankan pavilion’s organizing committee at Carassauga, and she continues her participation as a pavilion organizer every year.
Her work has led her to serve as a community representative at the Sri Lankan consulate in Toronto. Additionaly, Kanchana has been a Victim Services crisis counsellor for 7 years, as well as part of the United Way Mississauga’s South Asian Advisory Council and the Peel Poverty Action Group.
Her motivation to celebrate diversity is why she is participating in the Community Engagement and Leadership Initiative. Being an immigrant herself, she believes that diversity and inclusion is vital for immigrant communities to build a better life.
